| St-Calixte | Jocelyne Houle Murdered on April 14, 1977

Read Time:2 Minute, 24 Second

On April 13, 1977, in Montreal, Jocelyne Houle went out with 7 colleagues to celebrate her internship. They went to eat at the Barnsider at 2250 rue Guy and then decided to go to the bar Old Munich, located at 1170 rue St-Denis, and arrived at 11:30 p.m. They drank and danced until closing time and then walked to La Calèche bar on rue Ste Catherine around 1:30 a.m. on April 14th. Jocelyne was then walking behind the group with two 2 men, but she never made it to her destination.

When Jocelyne’s absence was noticed, the group returned to Old Munich but Jocelyne was not there. The group then thought that she had decided to return home. However, when they arrived at the Jeanne Mance Institute, where they were staying, Jocelyne was absent. She was also absent from her classes at the Institute on Thursday and Friday, April 14th and 15th and did not return to her parents’ in Chicoutimi for the weekend.

According to reports, these two men would have invited her to dance and one of Jocelyne’s friends would have seen her get into a car, but it is not clear when these events would have happened. Those who knew her said that it is very unlikely that the victim left with strangers: it was not like her to do that.

On Sunday, April 17, around 11 a.m., Jocelyne’s body, 5’2” and weighing 100 lbs, was discovered by a passerby. It was more than an hour north of Montreal, near St-Calixte, 65 km from the place of her disappearance. Jocelyne was found in a ditch on a gravel road in rang 5. She was lying on her stomach in a few inches of water, half-naked, with her bra torn and her handbag beside her.

The autopsy confirmed that the victim was brutally beaten to death. Her breasts had been butchered and she had a broken jaw as well as numerous facial injuries from punches and/or kicks. Jocelyne was possibly raped by several men, since a large amount of sperm was found inside her. Investigators have concluded that she was not killed there.

The 24-year-old was a nursing student in Chicoutimi. At the time of her murder, she was completing an internship at the Montreal Heart Institute, in the Rosemont district, to study respiratory therapy for three weeks. She was engaged and was to be married in 5 months, on September 5th, the day of her 25th birthday.
