On the afternoon of November 18, 1997, Sophie Champagne, 22, was found lifeless in her residence in Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan by her husband upon his return from work. She was stabbed several times and she was strangled. The murder weapon was also recovered from Ms. Champagne’s apartment. There was no sign of a break and enter, theft or sexual assault, according to newspapers at the time. The investigation showed that the murder allegedly took place on the morning of the same day.
