On the evening of May 14, 1974, Johanne Frégeau and a friend went to Dorval Airport, in the town of Mount Royal, to greet another friend. The two girls then took the bus to the Rockland exit on Metropolitan Boulevard and continued on foot towards Jean-Talon Street, where they were supposed to take the bus to Johanne’s friend’s. They were to spend the night there before leaving for Quebec, where they lived. Near the intersections of Monkland Road and Lockhart, the two girls crossed paths with a man that had his zipper down. The man continued on his way but the two girls felt followed afterwards.
The girls could not see him for a bit since he was hiding in the bushes. It was at this time, around 11:50 p.m., that the man came up from behind and stabbed Johanne five times, giving her friend time to escape and knock at a house nearby. The person who answered her also reportedly saw the suspect running away. Johanne was pronounced dead at Jewis General Hospital. The 20-year-old girl was from Victoriaville.
The suspect was approximately 5-foot-6, between 20 and 25 years old and weighed about 140 pounds.
